Smart Code Email Blasts

October 13, 2021

Nonprofits and cultural institutions want to reach out to potential visitors, previous guests, and long-lasting members, and they want to reach out to them in mass.

One of the most effective ways to increase engagement and reach large numbers of visitors and members is through an email blast. An email blast is any automated email that you can send out to large numbers of people at any given time.

The problem with these is that they aren’t personalized, and people who see automated emails that include their names will likely dismiss the email as spam.

This is where smart codes and personalized emails can be hugely beneficial to your organization and your member engagement strategy.

What are Smart Codes

So exactly are smart codes, and how do you use one?

Smart codes are essentially text-based placeholders that you can implement into wide-scale automated emails in order to personalize them. This essentially allows you to email blast while also maintaining the necessary personalized touch that will engage your visitors and members.

In order to execute a smart code email, you need to enter the code into your message at the appropriate place where a recipient’s name should be and simply send the email out.

When you’ve selected on the smart code feature and implemented it in the appropriate place, it should like something like this

“Dear [[First name]],

We’d like to thank you again for your generous donation! We’re proud to announce that we reached our goal, and your efforts have helped…”

When the recipient receives the email, they’ll see their name in the brackets as opposed to just seeing “Dear Donor” or “Dear Member.”

How to use a smart code

With the right technology, utilizing a smart code is as simple as clicking a menu option.

Messaging tools and emailing software often have smart code features implemented into their platform. In order to use a smart code, all you need to do is click onto where you want the personalized code implemented (typically at the beginning of an email) and select the type of code from the drop-down menu feature in your email solution.

Common smart code options for recipients will include a recipient’s:

  • First name
  • Full name
  • Company name
  • Title or position
  • Name suffix
  • Primary phone number
  • Mobile number
  • Address
  • And more

The different smart code titles have different uses, and selecting one is simply a matter

of identifying what your needs are and how best to make use of your resources.

Where and When to use a smart code?

As shown in the example above, smart codes are incredibly useful, and easy, for things like emails. You can email blast to thousands of guest and members without losing necessary personalized touch to boost engagement.

There are, however, other formats to utilize smart codes and reach a wider audience.

Smart codes can be used for:

  • Email
  • Social media
  • SMS and text messaging
  • Multi-media campaigns

Remember, when people are constantly getting messages, emails, and spam directed their way, it makes a huge difference to be able to address them by name and add the necessary human element that is missing from so many e-messages.

Whether you’re reaching out for a donation, informing guests on a new event, or driving membership engagement with a new campaign, you will see your engagement numbers soar with personalized touch of smart code email blasts.
